Review: Moon Duo – Mazes

Moon Duo – Mazes

Noise, the final frontier.  Unlike their previous EPs, they seem to be striving for a (slightly) wider audience.  It’s actually a little “nicer” than the older releases, but still dense and incredibly noisy.  The cascades of sound drench each song by mid point – synths in full force, setting up the tracks for layer upon layer of new/old sound.  Even with the sounds covering the tracks, the pop still shines through, cutting the sonic fog like sun rays.  It doesn’t always work and as expected the repitition can get a bit old and trying at times.  There is nothing here that is mind changing.  But where it works, like “When You Cut” and “Run Around”, it really does the job.

Grade: C+.
