The Fresh & Onlys – Play It Strange
I actually copped this on the strength of a few top XX of 2010 lists. I hadn’t really heard their music, though I was sort of familiar with the name. I bought the album – and wow. They deal in the garage genre, which makes them unique to start, as there aren’t a lot of those just out and doing work like this. It’s got a slight poppy feel, with a little country western in there. But even that varies from track to track. In some tracks, you’ll get some slight power pop ascending into some straight up noise, then to some 60’s California beach pop (see “Tropical Island Suite”). Definitely enjoying this record….though I’m not sure of the replay value after a few runs. That being said, it’s been a good listen – recommended.
