Pick of the Day – October 29th: Kylesa – Spiral Shadow

Kylesa – Spiral Shadow

Kylesa is a band from Savannah, GA…that i hadn’t really heard of, being that I’m not heavy into a lot of metal – though I’m not opposed to it.  However, I do like a little psyche rock, when I come across it.  The mixture of the two really make the whole thing sound like a giant bomb is going off in your ear – audio warfare, if you will.

With the right headphones or stereo, it feels like a wall of sound coming at you in tsunami waves.  It can be straight metal….then psych…but then it can go into late 90s/early 00s post-punk…..and they like to mix it up (“Drop Out” is a good example.)  The vocals are good, and not overbearing.  But I really come away loving it the density and clarity of each sound they create, and the excellent pacing/transitions in the mixtures of genres they use.

Pretty dope – recommended.  I think it might be worthwhile to work backwards into previous work, which I read is different than this one.  Could be cool to see where they’ve been.

  1. Nice to read a non-metalhead view on this album. One of the best things about Kylesa is their density. I think you might find the back catalogue a little impenetrable… I love the last one Static Tensions but as you go further backwards they become successively more abrasive and punkish and less progressive and pyschedelic. As a band they have certainly evolved.
