Salem – King Night
Might be one of the sadder, weirder, even sicker, albums I’ve listened to……but man, doesn’t it go hard as hell. It’s basically very heavy dubstep, mixed with Southern bass, Fever Ray, and Houston screw music. I’ve read varying reviews, good to bad….some loving the album, some feeling it to be contrived. The album is heavy handed, and actually a little bit shitty….in like in the way a drug addict would make music in his den. Some even bagged on the rapping – which I thought was cool, though I’m not a fan of screw at all. Those people were also Brits, who aren’t really up on the Houston rap scene.
But just listening to the music, with no regard for the background, it makes for an extremely interesting listen. The mixture of the two genres is a little bit exciting. Recommended, but definitely not for everyone…..especially not the adventurous. And if you are perpetually sad, then this might not be for you either…..it’s pretty back-of-the-roach-infested-restaurant, finding-heroin-filled-needles-in-the-dumpster music. There is no irony whatsoever. It is meant to be bleek in almost every way.
