Rahsaan Roland Kirk – The Case of the 3 Sided Dream In Audio Color
I was looking at Kirk, circa 1967 – 75 on Youtube, and decided to go ahead with buying some of his stuff on iTunes. A lot of jazz cynics have written off as the court jester of jazz – not really an artist in a true sense, nor someone to take seriously. But I went ahead and took a friend’s advice, and copped a couple. This particular one was definitely one of oddest albums I’ve ever heard – not just jazz albums….albums period. I really don’t know how to explain, or whether to even take it completely seriously. All the same, the album is excellent. I really don’t even know why. Everything on it is wrong, and yet it completely makes sense. Maybe that’s the trick….and charm.
The videos below are a super interesting 3-part documentary. His use of circular breathing (which probably ended up killing him – this must be noted, because it was a major skill he used to create.) and the unusual use of the instruments (even some he made) is in full display. Basically convinced his was on something while he made music.
